Facebook groups: A tool for writing enhancement and language skills empowerment

In this podcast, I summarize ideas discussed in a book chapter written by Grazzia Maria Mendoza. Enjoy!

Resource information (APA format):
Mendoza, G. M. (2017). Facebook groups: A tool for writing enhancement and language skills empowerment. In P. Hubbard & S. Ioannou-Georgiou (Eds.), Teaching English reflectively with technology (pp. 179-190). Kent, England: IATEFL.

Some applications to CALL/language learners/language teachers:
  • The author prepares the writing tasks, rubrics, and learning activities to do with the FB group, which shows that the author uses the group to support pedagogical goals (not just merely to show their students, “Hey, look, I am using technology in the class, isn’t it cool?”)
  • The chapter highlights the essence of piloting our technology application, instructions, and tasks to know what worked well and what did not with the plans.
  • The FB group facilitates social interaction as the students can write comments on their classmates’ writing and respond to any feedback/input for their writing posted to the group.
  • The one-on-one workshop might be applicable in real schools to ensure the accessibility of teachers and students who lack technological literacy.
  • The pilot project, learning tasks, and instructions discussed in the chapter can be guidance on how to use the FB group effectively as it helps students to learn the target language better as indicated by the score improvement in their TOEFL test.
